About

The Purdue Institute for National Security (PINS) is an agile and trusted partner for national security research, testing, evaluation and workforce development. PINS provides strategic access to Purdue’s full spectrum of national security and defense research capabilities, talent and world-renowned facilities. The institute enhances Purdue’s visibility and streamlines engagements with key stakeholders.

PINS spans the early stage, use-inspired research of Purdue and the later-stage applied, translational and classified research of the Purdue Applied Research Institute. It is structured to attract worldwide talent, advance national security research and grow the defense ecosystem at the West Lafayette campus and beyond.

History

Since 2019, Purdue has seen unparalleled growth in external funding from federal agencies for national security and defense-related research — from $48 million to $82 million in fiscal year 2022, a 72% increase. This has enhanced a rich, high-tech ecosystem in mission-critical areas.

PINS was born out of Purdue’s strategic Next Moves initiatives. It is one of the university’s premier interdisciplinary research institutes reporting into the Office of Research, which oversees Purdue’s $695+ million research enterprise.

Training the Workforce of Tomorrow

Purdue is committed to filling the national security arena with highly educated and well-trained workers. Purdue students get hands-on experience from internships and industry mentors. They also get guidance on security clearances, and receive job recruiting and placement services. From business management to energetics to semiconductors and more, Purdue produces workers who can hit the ground running after graduation.
